AN EDUCATIONAL TOUR TO MURSHIDABAD
Educational tours are of great importance. They broaden our outlook and enhance our knowledge more than books can. Last year our school organized an educational tour to Murshidabad in the summer vacation. We, a party of twenty-five students, joined the tour. It was a two-day long tour. Our teachers of history accompanied us on the tour as our escorts. Early in the morning we boarded the luxury bus hired for the purpose. The boys were in a jubilant mood. The entire journey was transported by witty jokes and quiz on History. The bus sped past the hamlets, fields and shops. After a journey of five hours, we reached our destination and checked in a hotel. The very next day we went out a-visiting from site to site. The tombs of different Nawabs, palaces, Qatra Mosque, the beautiful garden of Katgola, Moti Jheel – all began to throb with historical implications before our very eyes. The majestic beauty of Hazarduari and the cannon lying on the bank of the Bhagirathi made History real. The very air of the vast field of Plassey across the Ganges appeared to be laden with battle cry and bloodshed. This reminded me of Siraj fighting against Robert Clive tooth and nail only to lose because of Mirjaffar’s betrayal. The tour proved to be browsing page after page of History on the Muslim period in Bengal. We set out for our return journey on the third day morning with the experience of a hilarious trip of History.

Sub: Delay in delivery against your Order No. 225 of 2 March 2014
We are in receipt of your letter of 7 June 2014, reminding us of our failure to execute the order of screws, nuts and bolts within the scheduled time.
We are sorry for this delay over which we have little control. The goods you have ordered could not be produced due acute shortage of steel and brass wire in the local market. In spite of our best effort we could not procure these materials till April and hence brought the same from Chennai.
In these circumstances may we request you to extend the time of delivery for a fortnight. We have started full-fledged production in the mean time, and hope to deliver the goods before June 30 2014 positively.
Hope you would allow us this extension by a letter in return.

Sir,
Sub: Seeking time for the settlement of bills
We are in receipt of your letter of September 25 2013. We are extremely sorry for the inordinate delay on our part in settling 4 (four) Bills, amounting to Rs. 3500/-.
Kindly note that delay in clearing the bills is due to the slackness of the market during the rainy season. Moreover, a well-known producer of the same products has sold its goods at a heavy discount during April to September this year. As a result, we have not been able to sell even half of the good we bought from you.
In these circumstances, we shall deem it a great favour if you kindly allow us an extension of time for two months. Trust, we shall be able to clear all your dues by the middle of February 2014.
Hope, you would certainly accommodate our request and oblige.
Thank you.

Sir,
Sub: Loan of Rs. 10000 for the replenishment of stock.
During the autumn the market of cloth and garment, saree and dhoti are very encouraging. We carry sizeable business in a few months of this season. Probably you would appreciate, brisk business requires qualitative goods and a variety of items. But small traders like us cannot afford much investment at a time.
In these circumstances, would you please favour us with a loan of Rs. 10000/- for 6 months in order to help replenish our stock? I would mortgage my Life Insurance Policy against the loan and repay the same in three equal instalments from September with equal rate of interest. From my past record you would be sure of my credibility in repaying loans.
Hope, you would consider my application sympathetically and sanction the loan at the earliest.
Looking forward to hearing from you shortly.

As I am familiar with the production process and machine-tools of production, I intend to start a small factory at the aforesaid premises.

Please note, I would be able to arrange Rs. 25000 of the initial capital. I would get raw materials on 90 days’ credit. In this situation may I request you to sanction a loan of Rs. 25000 against which I would hypothecate my machine.

With reference to the subject mentioned above, we would like to inform you that we are a client of your Bank since 1980 and it is long 34 years that you have been patronizing our business by sanctioning loans and advances. Besides that, our concern is getting overdraft facility to the extent of Rs. 50000/- which is helping a lot run our business smoothly.
Probably you would be happy to learn that our business has grown a lot. Our Current A/c will testify the correctness of our observation. Our annual turnover is 1000000 for the last three years. So you can imagine the necessity of huge amount of working capital. Hence, we would request you to extent the overdraft facility from Rs. 50000/- to Rs. 200000/-. This would help us a lot in furthering the growth of our business.

Sir,
Sub: Dishonouring of Cheque No. 252526 of 12 June 2014 linked to SB A/c No.30866027675
I would like to draw your kind attention that a Cheque bearing the aforesaid number worth Rs 5000/- drawn on your bank has been dishonoured with the remark ‘Balance Inadequate’.
On an examination of the passbook I find that my balance with bank as on 04.06.14 stood Rs. 3650. On the next day i.e, 05.06.14, I deposited a cheque of Rs. 2000/- drawn on The West Bengal State Co-Operative Bank Ltd. of the the local branch. In fact, you had sufficient time to collect the sum so as to raise my balance to Rs. 5650/- on 12.06.14 leaving a balance of Rs. 650/- to my credit even after honouring the said cheque. But this dishonor of cheque has hurt my status to a great extent.
In these circumstances, may I expect your explanation as to the reason of dishonouring the cheque?
Hope to hear from you at the earliest.
Thank you.

Change of Weekly Holiday
This is to inform all employees that our organisation has decided to change the weekly holiday w.e.f. September 1 2014 due to severe power crisis.
It needs no mention that we have been experiencing heavy loadshedding since 2009. As a result, production has significantly come down. It has become difficult to execute the orders on time. This situation has severely hit our goodwill. But in the interest of the company and our employees, we cannot surrender to this problem. So, it has been decided that Sundays will be treated as working days while the Thursdays as holidays w.e.f. 1.9.14. for, Sundays being the weekly holidays at most of the factories in this locality, we may get power and will be able to cover production loss.
We are sure, you will extend your helping hands in maintaining production schedule.

Personal Letters for Class XII
1. Write a letter to your friend inviting him / her to spend a few days with you in the Puja vacation in the countryside.
My dear Arijit,
Your sweet note has just anchored the shore of my heart. I am happy to know that your Puja vacation is going to commence very soon. I would like to give you a proposal to spend a week with us in the countryside during the Puja days. After a long confinement in the city, you will really feel relaxing in the countryside. Moreover, the joys of Puja in the countryside are altogether different from those of the city. The beating of drums that accompanies Durga Puja in the village is something that you are sure to miss in the city. Then the immersion ceremony on the day of Dashami will surely please you. Besides, the rural environment will refresh your mind and restore your energy. Above all, my parents will be very glad to have you among us. So I invite you to come here. Don’t say no. We’ll have a great time here. Please inform me when you will come.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon. With best wishes to you and best regards to uncle and aunti.
Your loving friend,
Sanjukta
2. Write a letter of condolence consoling your bereaved friend who has recently lost his / her father /mother.
My dear Arpan,
Words can hardly give vent to the rude shock the news of your mother’s death gave me. It came to me like a bolt from the blue. I cannot believe my ears till now. It is so sudden and yet so real. The other day I found her quite hale and hearty. Her sad demise is an immeasurable personal loss to me. She was to me like my own mother. I cannot forget her filial love and affection for me. Still it is inevitable and common to all. May God keep her soul rest in eternal peace. Words of consolation will fall flat to you, I know. I am only thinking of your father who loved her with all his heart. I request you not to brood over your personal bereavement. Time will change everything. Please take heart to go ahead. I’ll meet you soon. No more today. More when we meet.
With best wishes to you and best regards to uncle.
Your loving friend,
Asit
3. Write a letter to your friend inviting him to your village during the summer vacation.
My dear Asit,
I have just received your letter. It is a great pleasure that your summer vacation has just started. Come here to my village-house at Gopalnagar. The charms and the attractions of the village will make you spell-bound. The twittering of small birds will awake you in the morning. You can wander about here and there in the meadows, riverside, groves or orchards. You will be physically exhausted, I know. But the gentle breeze of the south will soothe your tired nerves. Moreover, summer is ready with its baskets full of its seasonal fruits like mangoes, jack-fruits, lichis, watermelons etc. The delicious fragrance of ripe mangoes and jack-fruits will, I am sure, water your mouth. In the afternoon the songs of the home-bound birds will regale your ears. Above all, the sailing cloudlets lit by the setting sun will be a feast to your eyes. Hope you will not fail to respond to the enchanting call of bountifulness of nature in the village. No more for the time being. More when we meet next.
Looking forward to your early reply. With best wishes to you and best regards to uncle and aunt.
Your loving friend,
Anjan
4. Write a letter to your friend expressing your sympathy for his / her illness.
My dear Ajay,
I am shocked to learn that you are now laid in a hospital bed with an attack of malaria and have lost all hopes in life. Don’t be so much depressed and frustrated about your life, my friend. For, malaria is a curable disease. Proper and sustained treatment will heal you up. So why are you losing heart? Please strictly follow the advice of the doctors and you will recover soon. It’s just a matter of time, you know. So there is nothing to worry. Don’t be anxious about your studies right at this moment. Even if you fail to sit for the First Unit Test, you will be able to avail yourself of the Remedial Test at the end of the Second Unit Test. So don’t worry.
Expecting your speedy recovery.
Yours ever,
Asit
5. Write a letter to your friend describing a street accident you have witnessed.
My dear Ajay,
With a heavy heart I write to you about a horrible street accident that I witnessed today on my way back home from school. I was walking along the footpath by the Jessore Road. A superfast bus of route No. DN 44 was turning right to get entry into Chandpara Bus Stand at Chandpara. It took its turn at a break-neck speed. Just at that time a young motorcyclist was knocked down by the wheel of the bus. The driver used the brake to stop the bus. But before he could stop the bus, it ran over the motorcyclist who died on the spot. The local people rushed to the spot and started to manhandle the driver. Later the police came to the spot. The situation was brought under control with the arrival of the police. No more for the time being. More when we meet next.
With lots of love,
Yours ever,
Asit
6. Write a letter to your friend describing a picnic you have enjoyed.
My dear Amit,
You will be glad to learn that last Sunday I went to a picnic. The spot was Bibhuti Smriti Ghat at Barrackpur, Sreepalli. My parents, my younger sister Tanu and I myself made the team. We went for marketing the day before. We hired an autu-rickshaw to reach the spot. The menu was simple – Biriyani, fish fry, chilly chicken, sweets and ice-cream. I and my younger sister Tanu helped mother in cooking. During cooking we enjoyed Rabindrasangeet from our CD player. After the cooking was over, Tanu recited from Tagore and Nazrul. Then we had our delicious lunch. After lunch we strolled about on the bank of the river Ichhamati. Gentle breeze was playing through the boughs and scattered stray leaves on the gliding stream below. We took some snapshots. We also enjoyed boating on the Ichhamati. It was really a romantic experience. No more today.
With best wishes to you and best regards to your parents.
Yours ever,
Asit

My dear Apu,
Hope this will find you quite safe and sound. I have come to know from your last letter that you are very much afraid of learning English. Even after great effort in the subject, you find it difficult to improve. I am here with a collection of tips for your help. Please attend English classes regularly and listen to what the teachers read out. Read the text book carfully. Prepare homework daily and get it checked by your teachers. Take the habit of reading daily newspapers and story books. Use an Advanced Learners’ Dictionary by Hornby. Pay special attention to sentence construction, spelling and pronunciation whenever you read English. These and a few other tips will, I think, go a long way in helping you in improving English. No more today.
My heart-felt love to you.
Your loving brother,
Asit
8. Write a letter to your younger brother / sister advising him / her to read English newspaper daily.

5 May, 2010
My dear Apu,
I am quite pleased at your progress in studies. But what worries me is that you read nothing outside your syllabus. But remember one thing that mere bookish knowledge will not be enough in this modern age to survive in the rat race of keen competition. You have to keep you up-to-date. So I advise you to browse at least a daily newspaper everyday. It will bring the world to your desk. You can get news and views on various issues. From the newspaper, you can get information on politics, science, education, films, theatres, sports and many others. You can also know about the latest changes and upheavals in governments at home and abroad. You will learn a lot about literature, medicine, and agriculture. They will supplement your study materials and make you smart enough to face the world of reality at ease. So I shall ask you to read a daily newspaper with real interest without further delay. No more for the time being.
With love and good wishes.
Yours affectionately,
Elder brother
9. Write a letter to your friend advising him to give up the habit of smoking. [M.P - 1994]
Indralok Apartment,
36/A, Kolkata-700089
May 27, 2010
My dear Suman,
I have come to learn from someone that you have recently picked up the bad habit of smoking. The news has pained me very much.
Are you not aware that smoking is injurious to health? It affects the mouth, nose and other respiratory organs. This may cause serious diseases like asthma, tuberculosis and develops cancer risks, particularly lung cancer. This pernicious habit causes the growth of tumour and heart diseases. Smoking increases blood pressure, which is the root of many diseases. In short, this bad habit of smoking often leads to premature death. You must be aware of these facts and must give up this harmful habit immediately. Please promise to give up the habit for the sake of your health.
Awaiting your reply with good news that you’ve abandoned smoking. I believe that you are firm enough to do this.
Yours ever,
Sukanta
10. Write a letter to your friend, giving him/her a description of an unforgettable incident in your life. [M.P - 2003]
Indralok Apartment,
36/A, Kolkata-700089
May 21, 2010
My dear Ratan,
It seems ages since I saw you last. But still I feel you by my side to share every moment of my life.
Last Sunday, I believe, I came across one of the most unforgettable moments of my life. Frankly speaking, it was the saddest day in my life. We, some friends, went to the Ichhamati to bathe. Our friend Ajay was with us. We were all moving to and fro in neck-deep water. Suddenly Ajay lost hold of himself and was carried away by the high-tide. He did not know how to swim. He was drowning. Some boys standing on the river-bank were shouting, “Help! Help! Ajay was drowning.” A fisherman fishing in a boat nearby at once dived into the river and after half an hour’s search picked up Ajay’s body, still and lifeless. The demon of death snatched him away. His parents went mad when the news reached them. We lost one of our best friends for ever. The incident remains still fresh and lively in my memory. This was the unforgettable incident in my life. Here’s so much.
Hope you will be sad as much as I am after reading the letter. With lots of love and best wishes.
Yours ever,
Sukanta
11. Write a letter to your friend in about 120 words describing your visit to a fair. [M.P - 2007]
9, Hari Ghosh Street,
Kolkata-700006
May 21, 2010
My dear Rahul,
Your sweet note is just to hand. I am glad that you have enjoyed yourself very much in the ‘Poushmela’ of Santiniketan.
I have never been to Santiniketan. But once I went to ‘Pir Gorachander Mela’, a fair held at Deganga in the North 24 Parganas in honour of a Muslim saint. My father took me there. The fair ground is located on the bank of the Vidyadhari centring a holy mosque. This fair is important for its spirit of religious tolerance and integrity. People from both Hindu and Muslim communities have been taking part in it for centuries. It is also famous for folk singers who assemble here during the fair. I enjoyed my visit to the fair very much. The usual shops in the fair and the huge crowd were also interesting. Before coming back home, I ate very tasteful hot ‘Jilipi’ to my heart’s content.
I take leave here. With lots of love and best wishes.
Yours ever,
Sukanta
12. Write a letter to your friend in about 120 words about the important places of Kolkata that he/she may like to visit. [M.P - 2009]
9, Hari Ghosh Street,
Kolkata-700006
May 21, 2010
My dear Rahul,
Your sweet note has come to me as a spell of freshening April shower. It carries the fragrance of your native land. I am very glad to know that at last you are coming to Kolkata. I am sure that you will enjoy your visit to the ‘City of Joy’. As you are new to this city, you need to know which places you must visit. I am here to give a short account of the places worth seeing.
You may visit the Victoria Memorial Hall, a marble building erected by the British rulers. There are also the Indian Museum and the famous Calcutta Zoo. You may Rajbhawan, Tagore’s birthplace at Jorasanko, Vivekananda’s at Simulia and Mother Teresa’s house at Moulali. There are also the Metro Rail, the Circular Rail and the Howrah Bridge that deserve your visit. Besides, Kalighat and Dakshineswar will also demand a visit from you. There are many more. When you will come, we will visit these places together.
I am eagerly waiting for your arrival. Don’t forget to tender my best compliments to your parents.
Yours ever,
Sukanta
13. Write a letter to your friend in about 120 words describing him/her your visit to a zoo. 9, Hari Ghosh Street,
Kolkata-700006
January 1, 2010
My dear Rahul,
You will be glad to learn that we had had a grand time at the Alipore Zoo last Sunday. To get entry, we stood in a long queue and collected tickets. First we saw a huge multi-coloured migratory birds chirping and flying here and there in the cage and in the large tank. We saw monkeys, apes, peacocks, zebras, deer, giraffes, camels, leopards and many other animals. We fed bananas, vetch, nut and biscuits to some animals. Next we went a hippopotamus in a shallow pond. We had a great fun to see a chimpanjee smoking a cigarette sitting on a chair. The roar of the lions in the cages made us afraid. Finally the Royal Bengal Tigers walking up and down and roaring in the cages captivated all of us. It was a great experience indeed. It is still fresh in my memory.
No more for the time being. More when we meet next.
With lots of love.
Yours ever,
Sukanta
14. Write a letter to your younger brother in about 120 words advising him to get up early from bed or telling him about the usefulness of early rising. 9, Hari Ghosh Street, Kolkata-700006
January 1, 2010
My dear Rajib,
I came to know from mother that you are still in the habit of rising late in the morning. But it is a bad practice, you know. Procastination is the thief of time. It snatches the major portion of time and work of the day. Late rising is also bad for health. A late riser can never enjoy the beauty of a pollution-free morning. Nor can he breathe in pure air, full of oxygen. On the other hand, an early riser finds lots of time in hand to devote to the day’s work. Besides, concentration level remains full in the early hours of the morning. So if you rise early, you can concentrate your mind more on studies. All the great men of the world were early risers. Try to shake off your bad habit and rise early from now on.
With lots of love.
Yours affectionately,
Sukanta
15. Write a letter to your friend about the course of study (stream) you want to take after the H. S. Exam. 9, Hari Ghosh Street, Kolkata-700006
January 1, 2010
My dear Rathin,
Your sweet note has just anchored the shore of my heart. You have wanted to know about my choice of stream in the degree course. Here I’m to answer your question.
I am all along interested in English, you know. The interest in this foreign language has grown hereditarily in me. I, therefore, wish to take Arts Group with Honours in English at the degree course. I will try to continue my higher studies on English literature later. I have been preparing myself with that aim in view. What do you think of my choice? Please write to me your opinion about my choice.
With heart-felt love.
Yours affectionately,
Sukanta
16. Write a letter to your friend describing to him / her a film you have recently seen and enjoyed. 9, Hari Ghosh Street, Kolkata-700006
January 1, 2010
My dear Raj,
I am happy to inform you that I have seen a classic film recently. It is ‘Black’ by Sanjoy Lila Bansali.
It is loosely based on ‘The Miracle Worker’ which won Oscar. It is the real life of Helen Keller. She lost her sight and hearing to a mysterious disease when she was just 19 months old. The story-line is all about Michele (Rani Mukherjee) who played the role of Miss Keller in the film. Though deaf and dumb, she possesses tremendous mental strength and personality. Her teacher Debraj (Amitabh Bacchan) makes a dignified human being out of the little wild child. When Debraj suffers from Alzheimer’s, Michele helps him remember the success story.
I liked the film very much because of the unparallel acting by Rani Mukherjee and Amitabh Bacchan. The director has presented photography, music, the natural setting and everything else in the film superbly. The film has left a permanent impression on my mind. Hope you would enjoy the film too like me.
With heart-felt love. Yours ever,
Sukanta
17. Write a letter to your friend about your aim in life. 9, Hari Ghosh Street, Kolkata-700006
January 1, 2010
My dear Ranjan,
Your sweet note is just to hand. It is a great pleasure to learn that you have ranked 46th in order of merit in the medical list of JEE. It is unique indeed. Your aim is now going to be materialised. You have expressed sorrow for my not sitting for the JEE. Believe me I really find no interest in any of these. My line of thinking is somewhat different.
I prefer to be a teacher. You know that I have a liking for the great and dedicated teachers of our school. Some of them have sacrificed their lives in building the career of the pupils. Asit Babu, a first class in Physics of the golden days of Calcutta university has spent his life in the village and produced hundreds of talents. Had he thought only of himself he could easily hold a great position and earn a lot of money too. But he appears to be satisfied with what he has got. He is my idol. His life has inspired me to opt for teaching career. I want nothing more. This is my humble desire. Let it be fulfilled by your good wishes.
Awaiting your opinion in reply and wishing you all health, I truly remain
Yours ever,
Sukanta
18. Write a letter to your pen-friend about India’s remarkable performance in the CWG 2010. 9, Hari Ghosh Street, Kolkata-700006
January 1, 2010
Dear Alice,
Your sweet note is just to hand. You have expressed your wish to know about India’s remakable performance in the Delhi Commonwealth Games 2010. Now I am trying my best to satisfy your curiosity. It is the first time for India in Commonwealth Games that our Athletes brought home 38 Gold medals (highest ever), 27 Silver & 36 Bronze medals breaking all our previous record.
Krishna Poonia was undoubtedly the start of India’s best-ever performance at the Commonwealth Games. She got One Gold leading a clean sweep of Women’s Discus Throw. A pleasant surprise came suddenly when India won second Gold in Women’s 4x400m relay. Three new national records were also seen at the games – By Prajusha in Women’s tripla jump, Maheshwary in Men’s triple jump & by Men’s 4x400m relay team. Another fantastic performance was seen in Table Tennis which took tally to five medals. In archery India won 3 gold medals. But India’s most remarkable performance was seen in shooting and wrestling. 14 gold medals came from shooting and 10 from wrestling. Indian Male Shooters Gagan Narang won 4 Gold medals, Omkar Singh 3 and Vijay Kumar 3. But India disappointed us in the National Game of Hockey, where Australia thumped India 8-0 in the final and the nation had to satisfy itself with Silver medal. Here’s so much.
With best wishes to you,
Your loving friend,
Sukanta
19. Write a letter within 120 words to your friend telling him about the benefits of reading history.
9, Hari Ghosh Street, Kolkata-700006
January 1, 2010
Dear Abir,
I received your letter a couple days ago. In your letter you have remarked that history is a dull subject and to read history is to chew the dry bones of the past. But believe me, my friend, history is not so dull as you take it be.
History is no doubt a past account of daring adventures of great kings and emperors. So it is as romantic and interesting as anything in fictions. How can the tale of Alexander’s invasion of India and his confrontation with king Puru be dull? How can the account of the battle of Plassey be unpleasant? They can never be.
History enables us to know the past and the present builds itself on the past and the future on the present. Therefore, a nation bereft of the past has no present and future also. Development of the present society will come to a standstill if there were no past patterns. Hence we must study history to know what we were and what we should be. So I can assure you that the study of history will definitely pay you.
With best wishes to you,
Yours ever,
Sukriti
Editorial Letters for Class XII
1. A letter to the editor of an English daily about growing incidents of ragging in educational institutions.
Sub : Growing incidents of ragging in educational institutions
Sir,
I crave the hospitality of your esteemed daily to ventilate my grave concern about the growing incidents of ragging in educational institutions.
Ragging has now become a nightmare to the freshers of higher studies. Guardians are also left to pass sleepless nights in apprehension. Some students are even compelled either to give up their studies or lose mental balance or commit suicide. It may be well predicted that if the governments - both centraland state - fail to take stringement action against the culprits, ragging is sure to equal medieval barbarism. Exemplary punishment should be given to the offenders and their mentors. The only way to deal with the problem is de-recognition of the institutions where ragging takes place. As such an action is bound to affect the institution, its faculty and the students, senior students are sure to come to the help of the victims of ragging.
A powerful editorial from your mighty pen will, I think, go a long way in solving the problem to a great degree.
Thanking you
2. A letter to the editor of an English daily about banning of mobile phones in schools and colleges.
Sub : Banning of mobile phones in schools and colleges.
Sir,
I crave the hospitality of your esteemed daily to ventilate my grave concern about the banning of mobile phones in schools and colleges.
Mobile phones for students are of a luxury than any worthwhile need. In fact, their evil effects on students are more than the utility. Mobile phones not only distract students from their studies but also tempt them to misuse them as shown in television serials and movies. They often use mobile phones while crossing the road and run the risk of serious accidents. Besides, dirty world of sex has been open for them through web-enabled mobile phones. This poses serious concern. With so many public call booths, the students can always contact their homes in case of emergency. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has already ordered banning of mobile phones in schools and colleges. The Chief Minister of West Bengal should take a cue from his Tamil Nadu counterpart.
A powerful editorial from your mighty pen will, I think, go a long way in solving the problem to a great degree.
Thanking you
3. A letter to the editor of an English daily about frequent bandh-calls by various political parties.
Sub : Protest against frequent bandhs.
Sir,
I crave the hospitality of your esteemed daily to ventilate my grave concern about the frequent band-calls by political parties.
Frequent bandhs have now become the rule of the day. A bandh is no doubt a powerful weapon to protest any injustice and misdeed or bad policy of the government. But it is now called every off and on. Even the ruling party now calls for a bandh. As a result, all business and industrial sectors incur a huge financial loss. Patients and sincere workers suffer extremely from the dearth of public transport. But the daily wagers who live from hand to mouth are the worst-hit. Sometimes they have to spend the days of bandh starved. Even their children remain unfed. Moreover, political parties sometimes get locked in clashes, which often invite tragic incidents.
But the demand for which such a strike is called remains unfulfilled in the long run. So why is strike necessary?
A powerful editorial from your mighty pen will, I think, go a long way in forming public opinion against bandh.
Thanking you
4. A letter to the editor of an English daily about bad condition of State-run hospitals.
Sub : Ailing condition of state-run hospitals.
Sir,
I crave the hospitality of your esteemed daily to point to my grave concern about the ailing condition of state-run hospitals.
The condition of almost all the state-run hospitals is now disheartening. They have become veritable infernos due to the negligence and carelessness of both the doctors and the nurses. The doctors are more interested in their private practice than their service to the patients in the hospitals. Used bandage, Blood-stained cotton, used syringe, empty saline bottle etc. lie scattered in the wards. The uncleaned bedsheets and the unswept floors allure the dogs and cats; flies and mosquitoes to make the wards their permanent address. The food supplied to the patients is of very poor quality. The inadequate supply of life-saving drugs has made proper treatment almost impossible. The absence of necessary instruments has rendered the operation theatres useless.
May I, therefore, invite the attention of the Hon’ble State Health Minister through the column of your esteemed daily to the unhygienic atmosphere of the state-hospitals for his immediate recovery step?
Thanking you
5. A letter within 120 words to the editor of an English daily about the harm that is caused to young minds due to excessive depiction of violence and crime on television. [H.S - 2007]
Sub : Harms caused to young minds due to excessive depiction of violence and crime on TV.
Sir,
I beg of a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to express my protest against excessive depiction of violence and crime on television.
The exhibition of violence and crimes on many television channels is now on the increase. This has no doubt a bad impact on viewers especially the young ones. Being emotional and impractical in nature, the young people go on blindly imitating these in real life situations and invite troubles. The recent rise in violence and crimes among the youths in our society is a direct result of those shown on TV screens. This has given rise to some major law and order problems in our society. We come to notice in daily newspapers such headlines as ‘Parents or A Classmate Murdered Brutally by Son or Friend, ‘Schoolgirl Physically Assaulted by Youngsters, ‘A boy of a Rich Businessman Kidnapped by Classmates for Ransom’, ‘Teacher manhandled by Some Students’ etc.
May I, therefore, request the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting to enforce strict censorship on the programmes promoting violence and crimes in the larger interest of the society?
Thanking you
6. A letter within 120 words to the editor of an English daily expressing your concern at the increasing number of road accidents. [H.S - 2008]
Sub : Road accidents on the increase / Reckless driving.
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to express my grave concern about the increase in road accidents in various parts of the state.
Travelling by buses and minibuses and even going out into the streets is no longer safe. Reckless driving has now become the order of the day. Drivers drive their vehicles at break-neck speed caring little for the traffic rules. On the other hand, the on-duty traffic police are mostly mere spectators to reckless driving. All the requests of the passengers to drive vehicles slowly seem to fall on deaf ears of the drivers who are very often found in a drunken state. The commission system to the bus drivers and conductors has worsened the situation all the more. This leads the bus drivers to a rivalry to overtake one another. This rivalry sometimes results in the loss of many precious lives in serious accidents. Such accidents due to reckless driving are now on the rise.
It is high time for the Government to take stringent steps against the erring drivers to put a stop to this menace.
Thanking you
7. A letter within 120 words to the editor of an English daily expressing your concern about the rising prices of essential commodities. [H.S - 2010]
Sub : Rising prices of essential commodities.
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to express my grave concern about the rising prices of essential commodities.
The prices of daily necessaries are going up by leaps and bounds though there is a bumper production of food grains this year. The prices of essential commodities like rice, pulse, fish, sugar, wheat, mustard oil, spice, kerosene etc. soared up beyond the buying capacity of common people. As a result, people of lower and middle-income group find it really difficult to make two ends meet. Irregular supply of essential articles from ration shops has worsened the situation all the more. Moreover, price-hike of diesel and petrol has contributed a lot to the price-rise of everyday necessities. The dishonest traders and hoarders are taking advantage of this situation creating an artificial crisis in the market. People are getting involved in anti-social activities for the bread of life.
It is high time that the Government should take immediate steps against the dishonest traders and ensure a steady flow of essential commodities through the ration shops.
Thanking you
8. A letter within 120 words to the editor of an English daily voicing your protest against the habit of smoking in public places like trams, trains and buses.
Sub: Protest against the habit of smoking in public places.
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to voice my protest against the habit of smoking in public places.
The habit of smoking is itself bad. But the habit of smoking in trams, trains and buses is worse. Smoking in crowded places dissatisfaction among the passengers. Passive smoking is more dangerous than the active one. Besides, some passengers may feel like vomiting because of the disagreeable smell of cigarettes. In spite of the caution written on the walls of the buses or trains people do not care. Smoking makes the atmosphere inside the vehicles suffocating. It may also spark off serious accidents. There is a rigid law against smoking in public places. But most people are not conscious of this. So smokers in buses and trains go scot-free.
A powerful editorial from your mighty pen will, I think, go a long a way in promoting public consciousness in this regard.
Thanking you
9. A letter within 120 words to the editor of an English daily about the use of polythene / plastic bags.
Sub : Use of polythene bags.
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to air my views on the use of polythene or plastic bags.
Polythene bags are now widely used across the state. But nobody bothers about the hazards they pose to us. Polythene is a polymer of ethylene - a very toxic chemical. It is a non-biodegradable substance. Once produced, it has no destruction. It chokes the drain, eats up the water bodies and lowers the groundwater level. If left on the earth, it reduces the fertility of the soil. It contaminates the food that we very often carry home in plastic bags from the market. This food causes multifarious unknown health hazards. If burnt in the air, it emits a poisonous gas that causes breathing trouble, asthma, bronchitis, skin disease and even lung cancer. The Govt. should ban the use and production of polythene bags and boost up the production of eco-friendly jute bags or paper bags.
A powerful editorial from your mighty pen will, I think, go a long a way in forming public opinion against the use of polythene bags.
Thanking you
10. A letter within 120 words to the editor of an English daily about frequent load-shedding.
Sub : Frequent load-shedding / power-cuts.
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to air my views on frequent load-shedding.
Of late frequent power-cuts for long hours everyday in our state have given rise to many problems. Power failure disrupts life at home and outside as well. Due to frequent load-shedding, water supply is severely affected and the in houses run dry. At nightfall, people face greater problems. Doing household activities in the light of the candles and lamps becomes almost impossible. People inside the lifts get stranded. There can be no operation in the hospitals and nursing homes. People sweat profusely as the fans stop moving. The students, particularly the examinees are the worst sufferers. They can hardly concentrate on their studies as mosquitoes start sitting upon them to bite as soon as the electricity goes off. Production in the mills and factories is greatly hampered. Thus load-shedding means a huge loss in the national income too.
It is high time that the Govt. should install more and more power generating plants in the state to meet the ever-growing demand of electricity here.
Thanking you
11. A letter within 120 words to the editor of an English daily about environmental pollution.
Sub : Environmental pollution.
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to ventilate my grave concern over environmental pollution.
Environmental pollution has assumed an alarming dimension in recent times. The very air we breathe in is no longer pure. It is being constantly polluted by the poisonous smoke emitted by motor vehicles and factories. The river and the sea are getting contaminated by the untreated sewage discharged by the factories and crude oil cleaned out at sea by oil tankers. Noise or sound pollution is caused by the indiscriminate use of microphones during social, religious and political gatherings and also by the blaring air horns of vehicles. Besides, bursting of crackers also contributes to the noise pollution. Environmental pollution leads to serious diseases and health hazards like asthma, bronchitis, cancer, heart attack, deafness, dumbness and so on.
If the current rate of environmental pollution is not checked, it will one day wipe out human race from our planet. The ways to fight this enormous issue have to be evolved as early as possible.

Sub : Sale of exposed food on the street.
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to ventilate my grave concern over the sale of exposed food on the street.
Consumption of food from wayside stalls exposed to flies and microbes has already posed a serious threat to the public health. As many as 10 people of our locality are reported to have fallen ill and been admitted to hospital so far. Still a large number of young people frequently visit the stalls that sell such unhygienic food as fast food, fruit – cut and kept uncovered, and artificially coloured and flavoured drinks and buy them for consumption. The situation is quite alarming and likely to worsen if immediate measures banning the sale of such unhygienic food are not taken. Besides, steps have to be taken to increase public awareness about the health hazards that such unhygienic food poses. Therefore the media have a vital role to play in this regard.
A powerful editorial from your mighty pen will, I think, go a long a way in forming public opinion against the consumption of exposed food sold on the street.

Sub : Reservation of seats for women in the Loksabha.
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to ventilate my views on the reservation of seats for women in the Loksabha.
The UPA Govt. led by the Congress has recently brought a bill to reserve seats for women in the Loksabha (Parliament). This is no doubt a bold move. Of course some political parties are against the bill. They fear that it will decrease the scope for the male candidates to contest in the Loksabha election. Some again argue that there is no need for reservation of seats for women as they can represent the Loksabha by contesting in the election against the male candidates. It is true. But if there is some reservation, only woman candidates will be able to contest in the election. This will certainly secure their participation in the Parliament. As a result, no women bills will be passed without the prior consent and permission of the women. So the bill is quite relevant.
A powerful editorial from your mighty pen will, I think, go a long a way in forming public opinion in favour of the bill.

Sub : Frequent advertisements that interrupt serious TV programmes.
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to ventilate my views on the frequent advertisements that interrupt serious TV programmes.
Frankly speaking, there would have been no TV programmes but for advertisements. The revenues that TV channels draw from various business concerns make the programmes possible. In the midst of a TV programme of 20-30 minutes, advertisements on articles of luxury as well as necessity such as soap, detergent, cream, toothpaste, wristwatch and the like are shown for 5-6 minutes. But what irritates us most is that ads are put in at a time when viewers are so eager and curious to know what is going to happen next. Even serious TV programmes like the news, academic discussions, election analysis etc. are not spared. These interruptions kill the interest of the viewers and make the programmes boring.
May I, therefore, request you to write an editorial crying down the nuisance of TV advertisements?

15. A letter within 120 words to the editor of an English daily expressing your views on the system of private tuition.
Sub : Private tuition.
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to ventilate my views on the system of private tuition.
Private tuition has become so widespread and rampant these days. This is because most of the schools have inadequate infrastructure. The students of all standards find their lessons inadequate in an overcrowded class of 80-90 in just 40 minutes. On the other hand, the educated guardians and parents can hardly help their wards with their students as the new syllabus of both Madhyamik and H.S level has become vast and hard. This has led them to engage private tutors for their wards. But a number of evils like leakage of questions, negligence in teaching and invigilation duty, favourable evaluation of answer-scripts and the like are associated with the system. As a result, the worst sufferers are the poor students whose guardians cannot afford to engage tutors.
So the Govt. should provide proper infrastructure including spacious classrooms, teacher-student ratio and the like before banning private tuition.

Sub : Inconvenience caused by the use of microphones.
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to air my grave concern about the inconvenience caused by the use of microphones.
Thanks to science for inventing such a wonderful amplifying instrument like microphone. But this very boon of science has become a curse at the hands of some unscrupulous young people. Continuous use of microphones during any social, political or religious gathering causes sound pollution and thereby puts the people to a great inconvenience. The pupils, particularly the examinees are the worst sufferers. They can hardly concentrate on their studies. The old and the sick can hardly get a wink of sleep at night. The blaring noise of microphones causes different problems such as physical irritation, deafness, heart problems, sleeplessness and the like. What is worse, the pop, rap and other songs lower the moral standard of people particularly children and youths.
May I, therefore, request the authority to take drastic step against the violators of the rules of Pollution Control Board in the larger interest of the people?

Sub : Inconvenience caused by the hawkers on the footpath.
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to air my grave concern about the inconvenience caused by the hawkers on the footpath.
Hawkers have really posed a great problem in our town. They illegally occupy the footpaths and build their temporary business structure. This causes obstruction to the movement of the people on the pavements. As such, they are compelled to walk down the busy roads and streets causing traffic jams. Thus they run the risk of meeting with serious accidents. Besides, the hawkers call their trade cry loudly to attract the attention of the pedestrians. As a result, their minds are distracted from what they are doing - using the main road. This leads them to serious accidents too. These hawkers always have the backing of this union or that. So nobody dares to protest against the inconveniences caused by them in fear of getting humiliated at the hands of hawkers.
The Govt. should, therefore, take serious note of this problem and immediately evict the hawkers from the footpaths in the interest of thousands of pedestrians and rehabilitate them somewhere else.

Sub : Spurt in anti-social activities.
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to air my grave concern about the spurt in anti-social activities in the locality.
Of late there has been a rapid increase in anti-social activities in our locality. There is hardly a day, which passes without the incidents of robbery, theft, kidnapping and murder. The locality is entirely in the grip of hoodlums and hooligans. Only a few days ago a gang of robbers broke into the house of a rich merchant and decamped with all the valuables at gunpoint. Last week a local social worker was brutally murdered in broad daylight. Last evening a gang of thieves snatched away a gold necklace from a housewife when she was returning from shopping. The local school and college girls do not move about freely even in the daytime in fear of being molested by the local mustans who always gossip in the local tea-stalls. The police are aware but wink at them.
The Govt. should, therefore, take proper action immediately to restore law and order in our locality by curbing the anti-social activities very soon.

Sub : Eve-teasing.
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to air my grave concern about the rise in the incidents of eve teasing in our locality.
Of late there has been a steep increase in the incidents of eve teasing in our locality. The eve-teasers gossip in the local tea-stalls and parody so-called Hindi film songs to pass lewd comments to the young school and college girls. Sometimes they make obscene gestures and even go the extent of molesting them. At the nightfall no girls of the locality move about freely. Last week a girl was physically assaulted by a few eve-teasers when she was on her way home from tuition. The commoners hardly come to the help of the victims in fear of getting beating. On the other hand, the police are callous and inactive. Such incidents have been repeatedly reported to them but no initiative has as yet been taken by them to nab the culprits. It has become a great concern for all.
The Govt. should, therefore, take some stringent action to curb the growing incidents of eve teasing by passing and enforcing some law to deal with the culprits with exemplary punishment.

Sub : Admission problem of MP and HS pass outs.
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to air my grave concern about the problem of MP and HS pass outs in schools and colleges.
Lately there has been a steep increase in the percentage of pass outs in both the MP and HS. But the problem is that of admission of so many successful candidates. The introduction of gradation system, which has reduced the number of unsuccessful candidates, has aggravated the problem. Lots of candidates having the same grade rush to institutions for higher studies. But the problem is that the number of seats in most of the institutions falls far short of the actual demand. So the parents and the guardians have to move heaven and earth to get their wards admitted. In such a situation all the educational institutions need to increase a large number of seats to accommodate all the applicants. If it is not possible, a large-scale unrest among the students will be the result.
The Govt. should, therefore, establish more schools and colleges and recruit more teachers to deal with the present situation efficiently.

Sub : Present unrest among students.
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to air my grave concern about the present unrest among students.
The problem of unrest among students has become a common feature today. In fact, the growing problem of indiscipline is a cancer in the body of education. The chief cause of indiscipline among student is the defective system of our education. The students do not find suitable employment after completing their education. This condition makes them unhappy. Secondly our school and colleges are overcrowded. Hence there is no personal touch between the teacher and the taught. Thirdly, in society young boys and girls see their elders behaving in an indisciplined way and practise the same. Fourthly, the cinema is also one of the causes of indiscipline among the students. They follow film-actors and actresses in their dress, habit, romance and scuffles.
I would like to suggest some ways to fight this very complex problem. The system of education should be so reformed as to give proper training in discipline. Parents, teachers and politicians should present some good examples of discipline before the students. Moral education should be given to them. The students should be kept away from politics.

Sub : Corporal punishment in schools
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to air my grave concern about the harm of corporal punishment in schools.
Gone are the days of ‘Spare the rod and spoil the child’. Once upon a time corporal punishment was believed to be as an effective means to reform student behaviour and to manage a classroom successfully saving much staff time and without any class-detention or school suspension. But some recent researches have shown it to be not as effective as positive means for managing student behaviour. These studies have linked corporal punishment to adverse physical, psychological and educational outcomes including, increased aggressive and destructive behaviour, vandalism, poor school achievement, increased drop-out rate, school avoidance and school phobia, low self-esteem, anxiety, somatic complaints, depression, suicide and retaliation against teacher. The Supreme Court of India banned any type of brutality in the name of corporal punishment in schools in 2000. But this ban exists only in theory, and not in practice.
A powerful editorial from your mighty pen will, I think, go a long way in creating awareness against corporal punishment in the academic sphere.

Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to air my grave concern about the introduction of grade system in schools by WBBSE & WBCHSE.
The introduction of grade system in West Bengal has considerably reduced, if not stopped death cases here. So obviously, it has some positive sides. Firstly, students would have lesser pressure for studies on them in this system. Secondly, students would not do any wrong activity if they get less mark in their exams. Thirdly, it increases a student’s grade point average. Fourthly, this system is helpful for those who in spite of hard work are not able to achieve their goals and are afraid of exams. Fifthly, the grading system also focuses on sports with extra curricular activities. It will definitely justify the students who are in extra-curricular activities. Sixthly, it will reduce the spirit of competition among the students. Lastly, it helps in overall development of the students through continuous assessment throughout the whole academic year. But as the student who gets 93 % and the student who gets 98 % both will be equal in the eye of the board, the student with high marks will not feel well.
A powerful editorial from your mighty pen will, I think, go a long way in forming public consensus in favour of grade system.

Sub: Insanitary condition of our locality
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to air my grave concern about the insanitary condition of our locality
The locality we live in is now in a mess. Heaps of garbage and rubbish are lying by the side of B. C. Road and different lanes. They have got rotten giving out a nauseating stench. The dogs are taking all those on the public thoroughfares. Incessant rain has worsened the situation all the more. Air is being polluted posing a threat to public health. The local drains are also not regularly treated. Quite often they overflow spreading poisonous water all around. The locality has thus turned into an ideal breeding ground of flies and mosquitoes. Diseases like malaria and dengue have already broken out and taken a toll of some five lives.
A powerful editorial from your mighty pen will, I think, go a long way in urging the civic bodies to resort to the regular removal of garbage and treatment of the drains in the best interest of public health.

Sub: Deplorable condition of a local road
Sir,
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly allow me a little space in the column of your esteemed daily to air my grave concern about the deplorable condition of a local road.
The main road we avail ourselves of is B. C. Road. The present condition of the road is awfully deplorable. Parts of the road remain waterlogged for 10 / 12 days during the monsoon. The entire segment has been badly damaged. Pits and potholes have filled the road making it inaccessible even for a rickshaw. At night frequent load shedding worsens the situation all the more. A pedestrian is sure to break his limbs on the road if he is a bit careless. Childing mothers quite deliver on the way out of constant jerking before they are reached hospital. Heart-patients very often reach the hospitals only to be declared dead.
A powerful editorial from your mighty pen will, I think, go a long way in urging the civic bodies to address the problem at their earliest in the best interest of the public.
